Please verify your pin selection.
We created these NerdyKeppie exclusive designs for "Historically Queer: LGBTQIA+ Historical Figure Enamel Pins", our 2023 Kickstarter. Each pin measures 1.75 inches across and features a queer historical figure, surrounded by flowers in appropriate flag colors.
Born in Rhode Island in 1752, The Friend suffered from a severe bout of what was most likely typhus. They ran a very high fever for several days, and afterwards claimed that Jemima Wilkinson - their birth name - had died and her soul ascended to Heaven, replaced with a new spirit which reanimated their body, the Publick Universal Friend. They declared this identity "a new name which the mouth of the Lord hath named" (Isaiah 62:2) and founded the Society of Universal Friends.
Some of their private diaries thereafter used the pronoun "he" in self-reference, while others eschewed gendered pronouns whatsoever. They lived in a domestic partnership with Sarah Friend (formerly Richards) from Sarah's husband's death in 1786 until Sarah's death in 1793. Sarah handled the finances for PUF's projects and left her daughter in the Friend's care at her death.
The charismatic Friend is displayed in this version of the pin surrounded by non-binary colors: purple roses for mystery and charm, white roses for innocence, and sunflowers for friendship.
